Food is not the Devil; you should never feel guilty about what you eat!
For most of my life, I've been in the same boat as many of you: battling food shaming. Donuts, oh donuts, they're my Achilles' heel. The sheer delight of indulging in them is undeniable, but the guilt that follows is all too familiar. I've often found myself punishing my body for these indulgences, whether it's through extra workouts or skipped meals.
So donuts are bad...right?
Let's take a moment to reflect: Do foods genuinely fit into the categories of 'good' or 'bad'? Or does our personal perception and relationship with them shape these labels?
Consider this: A single donut has 7 grams of sugar, while a handful of grapes has 34 grams. The donut packs 200 calories, but the grapes are no slouch at 150. The donut has some vitamins and minerals, but the grapes are loaded. The donut has 2 grams of fiber; the grapes have 1. The donut is ultra-processed, and the grapes are au naturel.
So what does this all tell us? It tells us we need to stop judging foods based on a tiny part of them; otherwise, you can argue that the grapes are bad because they contain five times the sugar of the donut, or these grapes are good because they contain vitamins and minerals, or you can argue that the donut is good because it has more fiber than the grapes.
So, which is truly good and which is bad?
Let's challenge our preconceptions and explore a new perspective.
There is no point in assigning a moral value to any food because no food is inherently good or bad. Food has many different components, so there is no point in labeling food as good or bad. These labels simply don't exist in the context of your overall diet.
What if the donut was sandwiched between a full day of nutrient-dense foods- still bad- absolutely not! What if you eat a handful of grapes in a full day of processed food-still good-absolutely not!
Remember, it's the bigger picture that defines your health. Focusing on nutrient-dense foods most of the time means you can include foods like donuts without guilt or worries. Food doesn't have to be the Devil. It's all about balance and control.
I'm off to get a maple twisty donut from the St. Charles Bakery!

Until next time, friends, stay strong, stay fearless, and enjoy life.
